Aviation Word Of The Day - Airfoil

An airfoil sometimes referred to as aerofoil (rarely) is a term used to describe a shape of an object that, whenever moved through a fluid, creates aerodynamic force.
Or simply put, an airfoil is a surface which is shaped to produce more lift than drag when moved through the air.
The basis for aerodynamics and the operation of airfoils can be derived from the Scientist Bernoulli's principle which we'll take a look at,in the course of the week.
Primarily, airfoils are wings, tailplanes ,ailerons, elevators and fins.
Propellers which produce thrust also act as airfoils.
The resultant aerodynamic force which is produced by airfoils always acts perpendicular to the direction of  airflow.
