Aviation Word Of The Day - Flight Data Recorder (FDR)

The Flight Data Recorder is a sealed instrument installed in modern transport aircraft that makes a continuous record of the flight altitude, airspeed, heading, acceleration and voices and noices heard on the flight deck.

It helps in determining what actually happened after a plane gets involved in a crash. Data collected on the FDR is mainly used to help investigators determine the prime cause of the accident-whether human error,by an external force or mechanical system failure.

The recorder is usually installed in the tail section, the most crash survivable part of the aircraft. The FDR along with the CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) is collectively and popularly known as the Black Box.
