Heading or aircraft heading is the direction at which the aircraft nose is pointing.Heading is often mistaken for course (will be looked at in the next chapter).
A lot of factors, wind for example come a long way in moving the aircraft in other directions from the flight track. This doesn't affect the aircraft heading in any way.The heading is always the position of the aircraft nose.
It is usually calculated or referenced by a magnetic indicator or heading indicator. The heading indicator is an instrument in the cockpit that shows the pilot the aircraft heading.
It is always referenced with the magnetic north direction.
The heading indicator used to called directional gyro (DG) or sometimes Direction Indicator (DI) but these are no longer used.
