Aviation Word Of The Day - Radar

Radar stands for Radio Detection and Ranging. Radar is generally an instrument,or a device who's system is used for detecting distant objects (which in this case is an aircraft) and establishing their position, velocity and some other characteristics.
The radar works in such a way that it sends a signal that causes the aircraft transponder to reply by providing the exact position of the aircraft.

The radar enables Air Traffic controllers to advice pilots on actions necessary to ensure that they remain at a standard distance from other aircraft when airborne.

Radars can also detect aircraft movement on the ground. That radar is known as a Short-Range Radar.
Other radars are Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR), Airborne Weather Radar, and so on.
