A preliminary report indicates that the fire was believed to have started as a result of an electrical system failure. One of the short circuits in a state of maintenance caught fire, sending thick clouds of smoke in minutes, which set the Terminal ablaze on Thursday.
Majority of the checkin desks were not affected and were back in service as the airport staff cooperated in restoring service throughout the entire night.
Also, passengers with flights booked from Terminal 3 were redirected to other terminals, which required several minutes on foot since the roads were blocked in order to facilitate free flow of fire trucks.
"Only a shopping area beyond the airport's security control area was damaged by the fire", an official of the airport's operator, Aeropati di Roma (AdR) said.
