The term debris pronounced 'debri', refers to any broken or scattered pieces which remains as a result of wreckage or something destroyed. Call it ruins, rubble, fragments; they all mean the same. The only unique fact is that in aviation, the term debris is used. It’s very common to hear airport staff shorten the term to FODs (foreign object debris).

Foreign object debris can lead to a considerable amount of damage when not cleared. Most airports, all in fact, organize occasional walks to inspect and make sure all areas  are free of unwanted debris. FODs pose huge threats that can even endanger human life.

Debris can be of all forms. Broken bottles, rubber, metals, stones, paper, plastics, and so on.
For instance, metal debris on the runway can cause the undercarriage of aircraft to burst or the tyres of operating vehicles on the ramp. Also, ruins from bird strikes can also be sucked into the engines of a static or moving aircraft which will cause bigger problems like engine malfunction which will put the lives of passengers at risk.
