Aviaton Word of the Day - Runway

Runway at Brussels Airport

Runways are generally found at airports or airstrips. The runway acts like the road of the aircraft on the ground. The most common runways are  paved or tarred surfaces usually coated with asphalt or concrete, or a combination of the two. Runways are built for two purposes. For takeoff and landing of aircraft. Or you could say,the runway is a long narrow stretch created to facilitate planes before they end up airborne (in the air). This explains why airports go a long way to ensure that all runway lighting systems are in place.
Runways vary in terms of lengths and dimensions. Some are long, and others, quite short. Another significant characteristic about runways is basis for their nomenclature. In short, runways are named based on their direction and position.(Details will be given later)
