Aviation Word of The Day - Hangar

No.You guessed wrong this time.It isn't the hangar you usually hang those ironed shirts on.Neither is it the one on which Your new suit is suspending on.This time around.the term hangar in aviation, refers to an enclosed structure which houses aircraft when they are on the ground;thus, not in the air.

Think of it as an aircraft garage, where it is stored and maintained by engineers whenever it is faulty.Hangars do not only accommodate aircraft when they are scheduled for the normal periodic maintenance checks, but also house big jets like the A380.

Hangars are usually optimised in terms of space,as they can just house particular aircrafts for which they were built. In effect, a B747 cannot fit into a hangar meant for a B777 or a DC-10.It is also not a laid down rule that the ratio of an aircraft to a hangar be 1:1.There are a couple of really huge and spacious hangars - a majority I should say, which can house as many as five aircraft.
